Korean companies place a strong emphasis on building long-term relationships with suppliers. Loyalty and trust are highly valued, and many business relationships are built on personal connections and mutual respect. This emphasis on relationships extends to the concept of “jeong,” a Korean word that roughly translates to a deep emotional bond. In the context of purchasing, jeong implies a sense of trust and commitment between buyers and suppliers, which can lead to more collaborative and mutually beneficial partnerships.
Korean companies also prioritize technology and innovation in their purchasing processes. The country’s reputation for technological prowess is well-deserved, and this extends to the way companies approach procurement. Korean firms often invest in advanced procurement technologies, such as e-procurement platforms and supply chain management systems, to streamline processes and gain storage competitive edge. Additionally, innovation is not limited to products but also extends to the procurement process itself, with companies constantly seeking new ways to optimize sourcing, reduce costs, and enhance efficiency.
The role of government in shaping Korea’s purchasing landscape is significant. The Korean government has a history of active industrial policy, providing support and incentives to key industries and promoting the development of domestic supply chains. This can influence the choices Korean companies make when sourcing materials and components, as they seek to align with government priorities and take advantage of available incentives.
One notable example of government intervention in purchasing is the “K-Quarantine” initiative, launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This program aimed to strengthen domestic supply chains for essential medical and pharmaceutical products, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. It involved partnerships between the government, industry associations, and companies to ramp up domestic production capacity and secure critical supplies.
